Peter S. Heyl, MD, FACOG
Dr.
Peter S. Heyl is an Associate Professor in the Division of
Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology at
Eastern Virginia Medical School.
He is a graduate of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine and completed his
internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology/Internal Medicine at NC Baptist
Hospital. His residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology was completed at
Boston Hospital for Women, and he did a Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal
Medicine in the Harvard University program at Brigham & Women’s
Hospital, Boston, Mass.
Dr. Heyl has held academic positions at Harvard (Beth Israel Hospital in
Boston), George Washington University (at INOVA's Fairfax Hospital in
Falls Church, Va.), and at EVMS, where he joined the faculty in 1992. He
has served the department and school as Grand Rounds Coordinator for the
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Program Director for the
Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and EVMS Assistant Dean
for Continuing Medical Education. He has earned awards for teaching
residents at all three institutions.
His clinical interests include pre-eclampsia, the prevention and
treatment of preterm labor, and medical ethics. He serves as a member of
the Maternal Mortality Committee of Virginia’s Office of the Medical
Examiner.
He
has lectured locally and nationally in his areas of interest. Dr. Heyl
has led research projects
in preterm labor, dysfunctional
cervix, antibiotic therapy, and prenatal
diagnosis. He has an ongoing interest in both therapy for, and prevention
of, premature delivery.
