Hyperglycemia-High Blood Sugar

Hyperglycemia occurs when the blood sugar is too high.

Symptoms of Hyperglycemia

• Increased thirst
• Nausea & vomiting
• Increased urination
• Loss of appetite
  
• Weakness, abdominal and/or generalized pains
  
• Large amounts of sugar or ketones in urine

Causes

• Too little insulin
• Too much food
• Infection
• Fever
  
• Emotional stress

What To Do: Check Your Blood Sugar*

If 200 mg/dl or higher, check a urine sample for ketones. If the urine dipstick shows 2+ ketones in the urine it might be a sign of a problem and may indicate developing ketoacidosis.

If your are feeling ill and the blood sugar level stays above 200 mg./dl for more than 2 to 3 hours, drink fluids without sugar and consult your physician for advice.. If you had diabetes prior to the pregnancy you may be developing diabetic ketoacidosis which requires immediate medical attention!!

If you are not feeling ill and your blood sugar is at this level more than 2 times in 2 days call your health care provider for advice.
