Maternal Fetal Medicine                           About Us

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program is a division within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. The division offers a unique and wide range of expertise and services in High-Risk Obstetrics (Perinatology):


  • A Prenatal Diagnosis and Genetics Program staffed by several board-certified genetic counselors. The program provides a wide array of services including cancer risk assessment, counseling for preimplantation genetic diagnosis, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, percutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling, DNA and enzyme analysis and umbilical cord stem cell collection.
  • Specialized ultrasound technologies and certified ultrasonographers providing state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging for prenatal diagnosis of fetal malformations (defects), complex gynecologic pathology and other problems.
  • A Diabetes in Pregnancy Program which provides a unique multidisciplinary approach to the obstetrical and medical care for women with diabetes. The health care team is comprised of physicians with special training in caring for high-risk pregnancies, a certified perinatal dietitian and several certified diabetes educators who are also experienced perinatal nurses.
  • Individualized nutritional counseling by a certified perinatal dietitian is available when clinically indicated.
  • An HIV in Pregnancy Program dedicated to the care of pregnant women who are HIV positive. Patients referred to the program are eligible to participate in protocols utilizing the newest therapies for HIV in the antepartum and intrapartum period.
  • A Teenage Pregnancy Program specializing in the needs of the adolescent who is pregnant.
  • Antepartum Fetal Surveillance for high-risk pregnancies is provided at several fetal diagnostic units. These are located in close proximity to labor and delivery suites and provide a wide array of surveillance tests including non-stress tests, contraction stress test and biophysical profiles.
  • A Maternal Transport Program provides the most advanced inpatient and supportive care to patients who are transported to tertiary care centers via ambulance or helicopter from the South Eastern Virginia and North Carolina regions.
  • The MFM Perinatal Research Program currently has more than 13 ongoing prospective clinical trials in a wide variety of clinical areas of research including perinatal ultrasound, genetics, infectious disease and diabetes in pregnancy.
